Accumulating evidence suggests a link between smoking and breast cancer risk, particularly in premenopausal women.
face the factors
Identify your cancer risks and educate yourself accordingly. Research has taught us that many widely understood risk factors play a role, including our genetic makeup and whether or not we've had kids or breast-fed.
start your slim
Being overweight or obese increases the risk of breast cancer. This is especially true after menopause.
Tip:Try to maintain a body-mass index under 25.
Avoid using aluminum pots and pans. Cooking with aluminum may be a risk for breast cancer.
Battle your diagnosis with regular exercise. Studies suggest that staying active increases survival rates among breast cancer patients.
lose the booze
Alcohol use is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Women should limit intake to no more than one drink per day, regardless of the type of alcohol.
eat lean and clean
Choose proteins such as fish or chicken and eat red meat in moderation, if at all.
Tip:Embrace a diet high in vegetables and fruit.
reduce your exposure
Medical-imaging methods, such as computerized tomography, use high doses of radiation, which have been linked with breast cancer risk.
Tip:Get medical-imaging tests only when absolutely necessary.
know your risk level
Talk to your family about their cancer history and bring notes or a family tree with corresponding ages to your next doctor appointment.
Staying physically active can help prevent breast cancer. Healthy adults are recommended to get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity weekly.
