DISAPPOINTING HIKING BOOT

By H the Hiker

from West Virginia

About Me Experienced Hiker

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Not Water Resistant
  • Poor Stability
  • Poor Traction

Best Uses

  • Grass
  • Paved Trails

Comments about COLUMBIA Women's Helvatia Mid WP Trail Shoes:

These boots proved to be a big disappointment. While comfortable for walking on trails etc., I would not recommend them for serious, rugged, hiking. They offer minimal ankle support and have poor traction. I slipped several times on wet surfaces and even on a lightly frosted pavement. On a ten hour hike in the rain my feet were sodden after two hours.

I would not recommend these boots for anything other than casual walking in fine weather. I gave two stars, one star for comfort and one star for lightweight

Comments about COLUMBIA Women's Helvatia Mid WP Trail Shoes:

I picked up these hiking boots at Sports Authority after trying on a ton of hiking boots (price range up to $200+) and not finding any others that seemed to lace up tightly enough to fit my somewhat narrow foot. I am so glad I did! I have done several hikes in these boots -- including a ten mile hike that involved climbing up the side of a waterfall and a 14er attempt in 2 foot to hip depth snow. In the snow and water, my feet stayed totally dry! In the snow (for 5+ hours) my feet were not the least bit cold until about 4 1/2 hours in. (I was also wearing Thorlo hiking socks...) I will say they don't seem totally immune to getting a little slick on the soles if you are walking / hiking though water. However, when I have been with friends hiking their boots don't seem to do any better! Love Columbia products and these are awesome!
