Comments about TOMMY ARMOUR Men's 845 Speed Chamber R-Flex Right-Hand Fairway 5 Wood:
I bought a set of Tommy Armour Woods for my son. We went to the driving range over the weekend, he was eager to hit his new clubs that had been sitting in his closet for almost a week. He unwrapped this BRAND NEW TA-26 845 5 Wood and hit his first shot off the tee. SNAP and the head went flying down range!!! The shaft snapped just above the hosel. He was heartbroken and disgusted at the same time. "What did I do wrong!?" he asked. Well, we had everyone else stop hitting and he ran about 50 yards down the range to retrieve the club head. Dimple marks right in the middle of the sweet spot... he did nothing wrong. It was a clean and solid hit.
The tag on the shaft has a number and a date. All 3 woods have that same number and date so we are sending all 3 clubs back for a refund. I purchased a set for myself and they are all going back as well.
I was very disappointed. I have a set of 845s irons from the 90's that are great quality. I have been so pleased with them that when my son took up an interest in golf I bought him a used set of 845 Silver Scot irons instead of new clubs.
I have since learned that the company has been sold between then and now and that quality and craftsmanship have suffered. I have also read other online reviews of the "newer" 845 woods and read of other heads snapping off the shafts as well. That's just poor craftsmanship, quality or quality control... or a combination.
These were on sale so I bought them. I will replace them with some TaylorMade or Callaway's that are in the same price range. No more Tommy Armour for me... my son said he'd never buy that brand either.
Was this a gift?:
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
