Let me say this first- I did not go into this purchase with a good attitude. I had owned a defective Nomad 27.5 and was promptly refunded by the store I purchased it from. I saw that the Nomad 13 had been redesigned and took the leap of faith on ordering one. Upon arrival of the new Nomad 13 and new Sherpa 50, I was a bit skeptical about how well this 'two panel' folding solar unit would handle such a large battery as the Sherpa 50. After putting it through some personal vendetta tests (meant to make the panel fail) such as very cloudy days, filtered window light, flat out covering one of the two panels with a square piece of cardboard on a sunny day (all while attempting to clock the recharge time on a new Sherpa 50 that was sitting at 20% +/- a few percent. Every test passed with flying colors. Whatever you folks at Goal zero did when redesigning this solar panel worked like nothing I've ever used. I'm giving you a personal 6th star for the packaging. the zipper compartment is absolutely critical for my spare wires on a backpacking trip that ALWAYS end up missing at the end of a trip. Goal Zero products are so easily interfaced that even myself (not the guru of electronics) could figure out within 10 minutes how to fully operate this new system. Goal Zero- YOU WIN! I will always come back, and I'm am very happy with the customer service I've received in the past regarding my first defective panel. Thank you and keep up the good work. -James

I owned Nomad 7 which I had to return due not being able to charge anything, This year I gave try to Nomad 13 which was on sale. First of all right after taking it out of package and taking the protection foil off there were small scruffs and fingerprints...What? I don't know. The panel overall has very poor output, I tried charging my S3 and it failed. Clear day, temperature was in 90s Farenheit. Panel directed at sun, no shadow, glass nothing between panel and sun. Literally no better conditions. Yet it did not charge by phone. It says charging but stands in one place. I reconnected the charger to make sure. turned off the phone it was at 18% I went to take shower and then took the clothes to laundry. It was about 45-50 Minutes before I came back Result? 2% Charged I tried 2 more times, with same effect, The phone would charge faster with Hand-Dynamo Charger. I tried it last time with friend's iPhone 4. 1 Hours took it from 79% to 86% That's something, though 1 Hour is enough to charge iPhone by 60-70% when left idle. I tried all tips Goal Zero would throw at me, Still would charge very slowly. Last thing I tried was plugging USb adapter to 12v Car plug so that it would provide 13 watts not the limited 5 trough USB. Still failed. Then they proposed I buy Sherpa 50 Which yes would be good way but I'm not throwing 200$ for 50Wh of power. While for that price I can get AGM Battery that has 100AH. Plus if my battery charges that slow what would sherpa do? The only thing I managed to charge was my Wireless Laptop mouse trough USB and run small usb fan but those things require 0.5Amp if not less. Very poor Goal Zero

Won't charge Switch 8 Recharger

Comments about Goal Zero Boulder 30m:

I bought the Goal Zero kit with solar panel and recharger for the trip to the jungle in Guyana. The plan was to leave the solar panel and recharger in camp then be able to charge up cameras, etc at night.

I tested it out in Tucson, AZ, in direct sunlight and in more than 8 hrs it would not charge the Switch 8 Recharger more than 50%. I tried numerous times, changed angles, no improvement. The Switch 8 Recharger would take a full charge from my laptop.

In the end, I left the solar panel at home, wasn't worth the weight.

Comments about Goal Zero Boulder 30m:

I use my Goal Zero panels for charging batteries during off-grid ethnographic research. I probably should have gone straight to the Nomad 13 instead of getting the Nomad 7 first... it's much better for charging the Guide 10 battery pack. You can also charge other batteries (such as deep cycle solar batteries) with the Guardian 12V Charge Controller. That said, the Nomad 7 is still a convenient workhorse and will get the job done if you need something small. But, if you're deciding between the 7 and 13, just go with the 13 if your budget allows. On the downside, one of the clip rings for hanging the unit broke. It was not properly sewn into the stitching around the edge and pulled out while hanging from the small carabiner (that came with the 7 but not the 13 for some reason). Other than that annoyance, no problems.

Comments about Goal Zero Boulder 30m:

This seems to be a good solar panel. I purchased it mainly with the idea of being able to recharge mine and my wife's iPhone 5's when out camping. Initially, I couldn't get it to work, so I called Goal Zero customer service. First person I got on the phone told me it should work fine and gave me little other instruction. Tried it and it still didn't work. Called back and got a different customer service person. This lady walked me through different things that need to be done, then it worked. If you have an iPhone 5 understand that you need to put the panel out in the direct sun, let it warm up a bit first. Then put the phone into airplane mode and/or shut it down completely. Doing all that, it will recognize the power source and recharge. Or you can just use the Guide 10 Plus and recharge that.

Excellent size of panels fits in my back pack and can chain to another Nomad 7 I have allowing for multiple charging of electronics, solidly built panels. I use them to charge my tablet, phone, R1 and R2 speakers and guide ten power packs and other power packs. I am never without power out doors. Excellent for outdoor use and price is right.

Nomad 7 was used with an external battery pack to keep 3 cell phones charged over a 45 day period while hiking - camping off grid in Kenya and Tanzania. No electricity yet no cell phone failure because of lost charge. This type of usage does require you to use your head and plan how you are going to manage / sequence multiple phones while maintaining each in a functional state.
