Our ten-year-old son needed to move up from a nine-inch glove. The eleven-inch Mizuno GPP 1102 seemed the most flexible of all gloves of that size at our local Sports Authority. The material is artificial leather, of very high quality. Most of the other gloves in the bins were natural leather and they would have needed more breaking in. We also ordered two other gloves online from other manufacturers to compare, but we returned them, since our son liked the Mizuno best.

The GPP 1102 has a notch near the heel of the palm which works great in allowing an easy and quick close as the ball hits the webbing, but the glove is flexible enough to open easily when making a catch. This season, fall 2012, while using this glove our son has become a solid fielder on routine plays, and he has also made three great catches, one at deep outfield, one at catcher and one at second base. The last was a hard liner over our son's head, caught with a leap, which the glove firmly kept in place. Of course, the boy has to make the catch, so we have done lots of backyard practice. But this glove makes it easier to hold on to the ball once it is caught.

We are happy with the artificial leather, since our son is a bit smaller than average for his age and this light-weight glove is perfect for him. One reviewer elsewhere said that natural leather can become heavier once a glove is fully oiled. We have not put any oil on the GPP 1102.

Aside from its technical qualities, this glove has given our son a renewed excitement in playing ball and a good feeling about himself.
