Adequate for class 2+, surprising tracking performance

Comments about Sun Dolphin Excursion 10-Foot Sit-In Fishing Kayak:

I bought my unit from Sports Authority during a fantastic sale, and chose the Excursion 10" over the Lifetime Payette Angler which was on sale at the same time, primarily due to sit-in vs. sit on top. I think I made the right choice.

Initial stability is fair to good, secondary stability is very good. Basic hull construction is pretty solid, nice little shallow chines on the bottom for tracking stability. The three fishing pole holder spots are great and and the two holes in the back in particular scream for fun customization (a PVC-framed biminy? Small sailing rig? Motor mount? Rudder or drop down skeg?), but of course they work just fine as fishing pole holders.

I've used this unit a number of times with a pretty basic Werner paddle on the Verde River (Tapco, Sheeps bridge) at lower flow, and it easily handles I, II, and II+ rapids. Might handle class IIIs in the hands of a good paddler, and conversely, novices on class II rapids should be prepared to get swamped, because I do find it a bit tippy in rivers despite my smaller 5'7" 150# frame. And speaking of weight, I'd say it handles 200# fairly easily, but my paddle pal at 225# pretty much puts the stern underwater even in calm flatwater.

Where this kayak really shined was in flatwater at Lake Pleasant. I paddled alongside a Jackson Rogue with its skeg up and destroyed it as it paddled in circles, and even when the skeg came down the pricey Jackson could hardly keep up. In still water, I was quite pleased with stability while fishing, including contortion movement to reach around to the very non-waterproof rear storage compartment, which is not very well designed and should have been much larger considering we all know that the stern of the boat is otherwise essentially a giant, inaccessible volume of nothing. Basic paddling splashwater seem to find its way directly into the compartment in a very short amount of time, so it will definitely not be the place for your cameras and cell phones. It holds a six-pack of cans and not much more.

+ = TRACKING, stability, pole holders (without the holders, I guess its just the Aruba 10'), decent construction for price, very good size cockpit, pretty good adjustable foot braces, surprising maneuverability in class II rapids, decent weight, and out here in Arizona, you'll find lots of company with these boats! Every time I hit the Verde I see a dozen Excursions and Arubas. :).

- = Lousy non waterproof small rear compartment, reacts very quickly to slight flow changes and gets tippy quicker than expected when water transitions to white (although standard strokes get things under control quickly), seat is adequate but probably not great for 185#+ paddlers, and despite its average weight there is no real natural place to grab it for easy one-man transport (although for two man transport is had decent carrying handles).

Love this kayak!

Comments about Sun Dolphin Excursion 10-Foot Sit-In Fishing Kayak:

Bought two fishing kayaks about 4 weeks ago. We used it 4 times at Monksville Reservoir and Wawayanda State Park. Kayaked for 4 hours each time. So comfortable that I thought the seat was padded. The knee pads are EXCELLENT. You will not want a kayak without this feature...it saves your legs from banging on hard plastic. It is quite heavy. We bought the two roof rack attachments from Sports Authority to transport these. They work great too.
I am a beginner kayaker.
Easy to use. Felt safe. Easy to get in and out.
The only negative is the storage hatch is in my back. I can't reach behind me to get things. I wish the storage was in the front.
Highly recommend this kayak. I got the green. I wish it came in a pretty bright red color.

Not very rugged

Comments about Sun Dolphin Excursion 10-Foot Sit-In Fishing Kayak:

After 8 months the hull was holed in the stern where the thickness of the hull is thin. Making the hull rugged in certain critical locations would make it a winner.

Comments about Sun Dolphin Excursion 10-Foot Sit-In Fishing Kayak:

Use mine to fish trout lakes in Arizona. Great size and able to get through shallow water that my 10 ft. aluminum boat could not pass. Added a small ice chest where the drink holder is, held in place by shock cord. planning to add pvc holder for depth finder. Some lakes here allow boats with no motors but have no road access, up to a 2 mile hike. I built a 2 wheel carrier out of pvc that breaks down to fit in storage compartment and wheels in kayak so it can not be stolen while I am fishing.
