Comments about NORTHWEST RIVER SUPPLIES NRS Solid Gate Paddle Carabiner:
I bought 4 of these carabiners after watching my kids repeatedly drop their paddles in a lake while lazily floating around. The 'biners are huge and the gate is wide, so they fit over my paddles with no problem.
In addition to their intended purpose, I wanted to use them to hook over my car roof rack rails for quickly tying down the kayaks. The carabiners clearly state "no load bearing," but they appear to be very well made with quality materials, and I was curious whether there was any real risk when using them for this purpose...so, I hung one of the carabiners from a climbing rope and used a climbing sling to put my full 220 lbs on the 'biner. It definitely "stretched" a bit, but the gate stayed closed and it popped back into its original shape when I removed my weight. By my calculation, that means it can take at least 1kN of force, which is many times the force that would be put on it if I slammed on my van brakes at highway speed with the kayak tied down on top. It's ***definitely*** not for climbing, however.
