Comments about THE NORTH FACE Kaiju 6 Tent:

This is a great tent with lots of room. We have had the tent about one year and have used it for a total of 30 days in that time. As other people have said in their comments sometimes the zipper does catch on the cover. Most times it was because I was zipping it to fast. Every time we have been camping in the tent we have people come by and tell us what a nice tent or man we need to get one of these. Thanks North Face

Comments about THE NORTH FACE Kaiju 6 Tent:

I just set our new Kaiju 6 up, and unlike other reviewers I had no problems following the instructions. We have not slept in the tent yet, but based on the set-up and initial impression I am giving it four stars. I can see how staking out the fly in loose or rocky soil would be a problem. Luckily our family camping is usually done in National Parks and designated camp sites. We can't wait to get out to the mountains and sleep in this tent. I will update this review after we put it to some use.

Comments about THE NORTH FACE Kaiju 6 Tent:

I have a family of four and this tent will serve us well if I can convince my wife to come along one day. I primarily use it with my 5 year old and there is a ton of space. I like the ability to stand up and the vestibule acts like a sitting room. I've even rigged up a clothes line to hang jackets and wet gear.

I have used the tent for 2 seasons now. I'd say we have about 14-15 nights out in it. We been to the back yard, local camp grounds, and a national park. It has performed very well. Of those 14-15 nights out, all but 2 were with the rain fly on. I had no issues of leaks (or condensation) even in 5-6 hours of straight rain. Last night I used it without the rain fly and had some puddles of internal condensation. The other time I went without the fly, we didn't experience any problems.

I would note that the rain fly can be tricky to get on correctly. If you don't, as others have noted, the fly will touch the mesh at the front two doors. I think that can lead to some puddling and if the rain fly fails you will be soaked. Like I said, that has not happened to me. You have to be careful in set up to watch for this and adjust the fly because the poles will bend with normal use.

I would recommend getting the ground cloth. It would have been nice to include at this price point. I also used some waterproofing and UV protectant on the rain fly and ground cloth. I always thing that is a good idea.

I do agree with others that NF should probably include better directions with their tents. I think a video on each tent would be nice. There are some videos for some tents going over features. Seems like it would be a nice resource.

I also replaced the provided tent stakes because they tended to bend. I landed with the MSR Ground Hog. Went all the lines are used, this tent is quiet and secure.

Overall, a great tent that will serve you right if you take care of it. It will take care of you.

      Poor Set Up Instructions

Comments about THE NORTH FACE Kaiju 6 Tent:

Found the set up instructions to be nothing more than a comic book style depiction. No photo of what the completed set up should look like and the rain fly instructions were non-existant. Got the tent set up with no problem, but getting the rain fly attached got up in the "to hard" categorly so I gave up and slept in my little two man.

Comments about THE NORTH FACE Kaiju 6 Tent:

Tried to set this up using the comic book drawings with limited success. Got the tent up alright, but wrestling with the rain fly got up in the too hard category. Gave up and slept in my Dash 2. There were no photos to show what the end result was to be. Tent was purchased to support outdoor activities by a federal agency after some research. Does not live up to expectations. Will try one more time and if not successful will most likely end up on the shelf.

            Best Warranty in the Country

Comments about THE NORTH FACE Kaiju 6 Tent:

I have always owned North Face products and any time I have had any minor issues they have always taken care of me. Recently our 12 year old bedrock tent had an issue with the rain fly. My expectation was to get a repair of it , but since they no longer make it North Face stepped up and replaced the entire tent and FP without any negotiations... Best Warranty in the Country and best Customer Service team to deal with. Thank you North Face

            Love The Room!

            Pros

            • Great layout
            • Huge Vestibule
            • Roomy

            Cons

              Best Uses

Comments about THE NORTH FACE Kaiju 6 Tent:

We finally boiled our choices down to either the Kaiju 6 or the Big Agnes Tensleep 6. The deciding factor was that the Kaiju 6 is long width wise as opposed to lengthwise. This means that with four people sleeping with their heads against the back wall, when you walk into the tent there would be a bit of room between the door and people's feet making it easy to get to your spot. With the Tensleep you would have to walk around people if you weren't in the first spot.

I've only set it up once and my initial impressions are that it's a great big tent with tonnes of room and a massive vestibule. Having a large vestibule was important to us as we have young children and could put a toddler potty in the vestibule to avoid having to walk to the campground washroom in the middle of the night. We also wanted to be able to have an area where if it's pouring out, you can take off your shoes, rain coat etc comfortably.

My complaints are as follows. It's North Face but it just kind of feels cheap. It just doesn't have the little touches a MEC or Big Agnes tent would have or that you would expect for an almost $500 tent. The various bags close with just a bit of cloth as opposed to an elastic cord. The tie on spots for the guylines are not very "beefy" and there's nothing reflective on the tent.

I also don't like the fact that the doors on the vestibule open from the side closest to the tent. This means that in the pouring rain, when you open the vestibule to enter, you are exposing the interior tent to the rain.

One of the cross poles has a curved section and it's not clear on the instructions where this goes. Customer service told me that that pole is meant to be the top pole.

I hosed the tent down for a while and there were no leaks. Knock on wood this holds up.

                Great Vestibule

                By 970ah

                from Undisclosed

                Pros

                • Large Vestibule
                • Waterproof

                Cons

                  Best Uses

Comments about THE NORTH FACE Kaiju 6 Tent:

Overall, this is a good tent design, but I think the consistently positive reviews are stemming exclusively from the extra-large vestibule. Without the generous vestibule, this tent does not shine brighter than its competition.
Don't get me wrong, I love the main vestibule, but when taut, the zipper on the vestibule is difficult to close, and the storm flap tends to get caught in the zipper. With the vestibule open, privacy is lost since there is no "solid door" option for the main entrance to the tent.
But most importantly, and the reason I am writing... the flat area of the rainfly, between the three main tent poles, holds water. You can shake the tent and some water will drain down the sides, but some of the water just bounces up and down and does not drain. One morning after a light rain, I woke up to a pancake-sized puddle on the roof of my tent. I pushed up on the tent/rainfly to drain the water, and all of the condensation from the inside of the tent was soaked up by the mesh ceiling and then dripped to the floor.
There are many important features that make this tent great, but there are things that keep it from being a 5-star product.

                    Cons

                      Best Uses

Comments about THE NORTH FACE Kaiju 6 Tent:

I just bought this tent about 3 weeks ago and have taken it on two car camping trips so far. I'm an Eagle Scout and have done a number of backpacking trips, and this is my second TNF tent, but I bought this primarily for car camping and it is perfect for the occasion.

I purchased this tent for two reasons: number of people it can fit and it's height. I love that I can stand up no problem, which makes this a great option if you're bringing along people who are rookies with camping. It makes everyone comfortable. I would say this is more of a 4-5 person tent, if you like your room. This past weekend, I had 3 people and a dog in the tent and it was roomy. We could have added 1 more, with the dog, but not 5.

Quality is great, as expected. The rainfly is more like a seating area that it's so roomy. Great touch. My only complaint was that 1 tent pole and 1 rainfly pole are the same color and my first time setting up the tent, I wasn't sure which one went with what. However, you only make that mistake twice and now you know that the one that bends severely is for the rainfly :)
